CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

The group didn’t stop until they reached the bottom of the peak where a stream meandered through the summits. By then, they were all so out of breath they were grateful for the reprieve.

Leaning over the river bend, Dante dropped down to her knees and scooped up a handful of water. Splashing the liquid across her face, she watched crimson droplets fall into the water, turning the river red.

It wasn’t long before Alexander joined her, practically dunking his head into the waterway.

Felix guided the horses to the river, his breathing heavy. “Does someone want to explain what just happened?”

Dante couldn’t form words to answer her second in command, and Alexander’s head was completely submerged. Shaking her head, Dante reached down and cupped another handful of water. This time she didn’t splash it against her face; instead she took large gulps and let it wet the back of her cotton-dried throat.

Not allowing himself a drink, Felix began walking around the meadow, plucking weeds from the brown grass.

Alexander had since removed his head from the water and was shaking it like a dog. Usually, she would’ve commented on their likeness, but Dante was so worn all she could do was focus on her breathing.

Her arm throbbed and her shoulder felt like someone had taken a hammer to it. Sitting on the grass, Dante watched the water race by as Alexander got up and walked over to one of the horses. Not having the strength to hold herself, she leaned back against the grass and closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing. As the sun beat down on their location, Dante was grateful to enjoy it.

Dante registered someone kneeling beside her, but refused to open her eyes until Felix spoke.

“Can you get up?”

Nodding to his request, Dante pushed herself up with her good arm.

“Where’s it hurt?” his words were clipped with concern, almost like he didn’t want to show his true feelings.

Gesturing to her left shoulder, Felix set his bouquet on the ground while running his hands over the swollen skin, his hands gently gliding over the bone and socket feeling for any imperfections.

Though his touch was tender, the mere contact sent shooting pains down her arm and back.

Sighing, Felix shook his head as he leaned back on his haunches. “I don’t feel anything, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fractured.” he removed his jacket, eyeing her. “We’re going to need to bind your arm until someone can get a better look.”

Helping her out of her own jacket, Dante gritted her teeth against the pain the simple motions and touches caused.

Felix took his thinner jacket and tied it to her torso, her arm wedged between her chest and the piece of clothing. Helping her to her feet, Felix then bent down to pick up the bouquet he had before. “This witch hazel should stop the bleeding.”

Dante just bobbed her head, knowing he meant to apply a paste with the petals and bark to the gash on her head that was still oozing blood.
